Water Bugs and Dragonflies- Explaining death to Young Children
I was introduced to this book when we experienced a loss in our community and found it to be the most caring, comforting and beautiful little book I have come across in a long time.
I later passed it on to a friend whose children had their pet die.
The story is simple, small waterbugs at the bottom of a pond observe that some of them suddenly “need” to leave and pop up the surface to see what is up there and never come back—the little bugs then wonder why?
One day, one of them feels the need to “go” and promises to come back and to tell the others what it is like.
When he gets above the surface he sees how wonderful it is, how sunny and warm and then he also realizes that he also has sprouted wings!
He is now a dragonfly, and no matter how much he tries to go back down to tell his friends he can not—he decides that they will just have to find out the secret when it is their turn to come up, and flies off into the sun.
The book also has a page on things that parents can say to their children as well as suggestions of other books and resources.
I not only found it helpful for my children but for myself as well, and reccomend it not only for children but for any parent who has suffered a loss.
